SOLEDAD, Calif. — A recall has been issued for bags of ready-to-eat broccoli florets in 20 U.S. states due to potential contamination with listeria.

Braga Fresh has voluntarily recalled a specific production lot of 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets, which are washed and ready-to-eat, as per a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The affected products have a “best if used by” date of December 10, 2024, and were sold at Walmart stores in several states.

According to the FDA notice dated December 31, 2024, “This product is past its best if used by date and is no longer available in stores, but consumers may have frozen the item for future use. Consumers who have this product in their freezers should not consume it and should discard the product.”

The contamination risk was identified following a random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services, which detected Listeria monocytogenes in a sample collected from a Texas store. This bacterium can cause serious infections.

No illnesses related to the product have been reported so far, the FDA stated.

Listeria infection can be deadly for older Americans, pregnant women and consumers with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis sufferers can experience symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headache, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
