Irv Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., the influential music executive and founder of Murder Inc. Records, has died at the age of 54. Gotti was instrumental in shaping the hip-hop and R&B landscape of the late 1990s and early 2000s, working with artists such as Ja Rule, Ashanti, and DMX.
Gotti began his career in the music industry as an A&R executive at Def Jam Recordings, where he played a pivotal role in signing DMX and contributing to the success of Jay-Z’s debut album, Reasonable Doubt. In 1998, he co-founded Murder Inc. Records, which became a powerhouse in the music industry, producing numerous hits that blended rap and R&B elements. Under his leadership, the label released chart-topping tracks like “Always On Time” by Ja Rule featuring Ashanti and “Foolish” by Ashanti.
Throughout his career, Gotti faced various challenges, including legal issues and health problems. In early 2024, he suffered a minor stroke related to his long-standing battle with diabetes, which led him to adopt healthier lifestyle choices. Despite these efforts, Gotti’s health remained a concern, and he passed away surrounded by family and friends.
Gotti is survived by his three children: Angie, JJ, and Sonny. In a statement, they expressed their profound loss: “Our dad was an incredible man, a true visionary who transformed the hip-hop industry and changed the game for artists and fans alike.
